As the cooperative sector continues to catch up with the latest technological trends in a bid to serve its members better while tapping vast opportunities in their quest to become competitive entities at the same time, there is that need to come up with a big event to make these possible.
This is also rationale behind the hosting of the first Cooperative Information Technology Summit that will take place on February 26 to 27, from 8am to 5pm at the Bayview Hotel along Roxas Boulevard in Manila. The summit is presented by the Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperatives (PFCCO) in partnership with Kowops e-Community Solution of Canada, a social entrepreneurial company with a vision of peace and prosperity for developing countries via mission of distributing e-community technologies to micro-financial institutions under a free license agreement; and PLDT SME Nation.
This two-day affair–which was reset from late last year due to the after-effects triggered by typhoon Ondoy to a more convenient period to start the first quarter of 2010 in a very educational and enlightening way, will be the first-ever IT summit initiated by a coop and federation. It is also the first activity that will jump start the 50th anniversary celebration of the PFCCO as it commemorates this significant milestone this year.
The three objectives behind the hosting of this ‘first’ in the sector are:
- to educate the members on the value of technology to their lives and operations;
- to introduce coop trading and money transfer platforms such as kowops.biz and koop pera padala; and
- to orient the participants on the philosophy, principles and history of cooperatives vis-a-vis modern technology.
In addition to the event being an excellent oportunity for participants to network with fellow cooperators and enhance their know-how from I.T. and coop experts, participants will each receive complimentary resource and educational materials in USB that will serve as helpful aids even after the summit as well as a formal certificate of participation that will document their achievement and commitment to continuing professional development.

The IT Summit is a good initiative from PFCCO. Cooperatives must keep themselves abreast with new developments in IT technology & solutions for faster and effective service to members. More power to PFCCO!
